Trailer Parks Go Upscale
(Business 2.0) – Yoga classes, seaweed body wraps, and not a blade of AstroTurf--these are not your granddad's RV parks. With baby boomers paying $200,000 or more for mobile homes with high-speed Internet access and wine cellars, new luxury RV resorts are catering to their lifestyle. Many are being built by RV manufacturers to spur demand for high-end models, which constitute the fastest-growing segment of the industry, according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. The Desert Shores Motor Coach Resort, erected by Country Coach founder Bob Lee in Indio, Calif., offers gourmet kitchens and private pools. RV maker Monaco Coach is spending $30 million to build resorts in Las Vegas and Indio, where guests will be able to cruise by motorboat to a clubhouse for cocktails. Still, even at such swanky parks, RV culture lives on: The Springs at Borrego, in Borrego Springs, Calif., has a golf course, but there's also a kitchen for community potlucks. |
