Ever since founder Michael Dell returned to the helm in 2007 to help the company regain the pole position over archrival HP, Dell has launched various initiatives, including one to more heavily target consumers instead of the corporations it relied on in the past. Despite the initiatives, results remain uneven.

Now the PC maker is reported to be developing its first-ever mobile phone. Analysts worry that a so-called smartphone from Dell, designed to run software by Microsoft and Google, would face a slew of competitors, making the device potentially unprofitable. Dell hasn't publicly commented on its cellular ambitions. - S.K.
