A down economy gave a lift last year to Medco, the country's largest stand-alone pharmacy-benefits manager, as consumers tried to save money by switching to generic drugs and ordering their prescriptions by mail.

Profits jumped 21% to $1.1 billion. Mail order prescriptions rose 11.6% over the year, helping Medco gain market share from competitors like CVS Caremark. - J.Y.
