Wal-Mart may be gaining market share in a lousy economy, but rival discount retailer Sears Holdings is struggling to attract shoppers. The 2005 hook-up between Sears and Kmart, which was supposed to combine the two brands' strengths, has yet to bear fruit. Profits continue to drop, and analysts see them falling further.

The company has been without a CEO for more than a year, and no candidates are coming forward. Sears Holdings has been quietly building up its Web presence as it closes stores: Early in 2008, it hired James Barr, who ran Microsoft shopping sites, to lead its online unit. - J.Y.
