The fourth-biggest U.S. food retailer by sales took advantage of consumers pulling back on eating out with an expanded prepared food line and its cheaper private label offerings.

Safeway runs more than 1,700 grocery stores in North America - not only under its banner name, but Dominick's, Vons and Tom Thumb as well. Last year it opened its first small grocery, called The Market, in southern California not long after Tesco debuted its Fresh & Easy markets. - J.Y.
