As the world slid into recession last year, few stocks were punished as swiftly as Archer Daniels Midland. Its shares swooned from $49 in April to under $14 by October. For ADM, meat is money - or at least the feed it sells to fatten livestock is money. And when economies shrink, so does meat consumption and ADM's business.

The stock has rallied since October. But concerns over the lingering recession, the collapse of the market for corn to be made into ethanol, and a general oversupply of the grains suggest a tough year ahead. Still, with $3.3 billion in cash, ADM should weather even this tough season. - M.C.
