One of the largest independent refiners in the country, Sunoco struggled early last year with volatile crude oil prices, which compressed refining margins and hurt profitability throughout its network of 4,700 retail locations. But the drop in crude oil prices in the second half of 2008 helped the refiner recover.

Last August the company brought on industry veteran Lynn Elsenhans as its CEO and president. Elsenhans came from Shell, where she led that company's refining and chemical operations. To streamline Sunoco's businesses, Elsenhans put its chemical unit up for sale. And in March, the company said it would cut 20% of its salaried workforce, or 750 jobs, which accounted for approximately 5.5% of Sunoco's total headcount. - J.Y.
