27. Archer Daniels Midland
ADM is the world's largest corn processor, and the biggest processor of oil seeds -- soybeans, cottonseed, sunflower seeds, flax seed -- in the U.S. Though revenue was down slightly in 2009, ADM chief Patricia Woertz is looking to increase the company's top line by expanding abroad, particularly in South America, where it is the leading originator of soybeans, and in Europe and India. Among ADMs's many non-food ventures: a newly opened bioplastics plant in Iowa; a propylene/ethylene glycol plant; and two co-generation power plants. The company also is part of a consortium researching the viability of carbon sequestration technology. --P.N. |
