Five years after Michael Dell returned to lead the PC maker he founded and transformed into a colossus, Dell may finally be ready for a second act. The next year will be crucial as it bolsters efforts to rely less on PC and laptop sales and more on services, servers and storage. To wit, the company stepped up the pace of its acquisitions in the services area, buying firms specializing in everything from security to thin clients. Management is clearly focused on growth, even as it has been able to improve its market share in the old-line business. For the year, Dell's revenue was $62.1 billion, of which a record $18.6 billion came from enterprise solutions and services. The non-PC side of the business now represents 30% of revenue and almost 50% of gross margin dollars. |
