It hasn't been the smoothest year for Indianapolis-based health insurer WellPoint. After a disappointing second quarter, CEO Angela F. Braly resigned, leaving Executive Vice President John Cannon as interim president and CEO until the recent appointment of Joseph Swedish, former CEO of Trinity Health. The company also made a few notable acquisitions in 2012-- first with the buyout of 1-800-CONTACTS in June, and second with its acquisition of Amerigroup in December. The Amerigroup acquisition boosted WellPoint's medical enrollment to nearly 36 million members, up 5.5% from 2011, according to the company's fourth quarter earnings report.
