After flatlining for a number of years, shares of Kroger took off in 2012. The stock is up nearly 50% in the past year. Sales rose and earnings more than doubled at the nation’s largest grocery chain. At least part of the jump, though, was due to lower pension costs.
Kroger had expanded its customer rewards program -- offering targeted coupons -- and rolled out new lines of private label products.
