(FORTUNE Magazine) – For three days last month, the streets of Fort Myers, Fla., were ''teeming with zombies''. . . Some 300 local residents . . . had been engaged to portray zombies in the second sequel to (George) Romero's cult classic Night of the Living Dead . . . Trouble is, each of the 300 . . . extras was paid only $1 per day . . . an apparent violation of the federal minimum wage laws. (A) Labor Dept. official in Florida . . . explained that any employer ''producing goods for interstate commerce''--such as a motion picture--falls under the Fair Labor Standards Act . . . Local resident Gary Brotz, who had been employed by the production company to hire the extras . . . said many of the local residents were willing to pay him to be in a film. --From a report in Daily Variety.
