(FORTUNE Magazine) – Time Inc. (publisher of FORTUNE) and Tele-Communications, the two largest U.S. cable operators, have made a joint bid to acquire Warner Amex Cable Communications for $750 million in cash. They would also assume more than $500 million of Warner Amex debt. Warner Amex, the sixth-ranked cable company, is jointly owned by American Express and Warner Communications. Apple Computer announced a restructuring to make the company more efficient and said that Chairman Steven Jobs, who has been in charge of the Macintosh line, would assume a ''more global role.'' Delbert Yocam, executive vice president in charge of the Apple II division, was promoted to head up all product operations, including Macintosh.
