General Computer Co.
By - Daniel P. Wiener

(FORTUNE Magazine) – One of the biggest worms in Apple Computer's Macintosh is the slow disk drive the machine uses to store and retrieve information. Privately held General Computer of Cambridge, Massachusetts -- initially founded in 1982 by three MIT undergraduates to design video games for Atari -- seems to have discovered a profitable solution to the problem. Its $2,195 HyperDrive -- which even Apple President John Sculley uses -- is up to ten times faster than the Macintosh drive. Since introducing the product in January, General Computer has generated sales of nearly $3 million and expects to exceed $15 million by year-end.
