Voicemail International Inc.

(FORTUNE Magazine) – Voicemail of Santa Clara, California, has developed a telephone-answering machine with a difference -- it gives each caller a tailor-made message. For example, using a push-button phone and a special code, a Trans World Airlines pilot can call TWA's Voicemail system to find out his flight assignments. Similarly, customers can phone Dow Jones's Voicemail for the latest stock and news information about a company. Digital Equipment Corp. helps market Voicemail in the U.S., and British Telecom offers the product in Britain. Voicemail lost $1.5 million on sales of $2.4 million last year, but turned a profit during the second quarter this year, and hopes to earn as much as $1 million on sales of $7 million. Even so, the price for a Voicemail unit (a combination of one share of common stock and one warrant) has slid from the 1984 offering price of $5 a share to a recent $3.50.
