(FORTUNE Magazine) – SANTA ANA, Calif. -- A convict said Saturday he hitchhiked across the United States to California and stole a credit card so he could be arrested and sent to one of the state's ''country club'' prisons. Charles R. Burns, 37, . . . was sentenced Thursday to six months in jail . . . ''I did everything I could to get arrested out here,'' Burns told the Register . . . ''I've been in prison in Georgia, Nevada, and California,'' Burns said. '' Let me tell you, California has the best prisons. The food is a lot better here, but it's the leniency that I like best.'' -- From a UPI dispatch.
