(FORTUNE Magazine) – The Transit Authority will study the possibility of eliminating sections of 11 subway lines because of low ridership . . . The subway segments . . . are primarily in low-income neighborhoods of the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens . . . The list of lines to be studied was made public by Councilwoman Carol Greitzer . . . ''This planned shrinkage is an outrage that cannot be justified by any method of evaluating ridership,'' the councilwoman said . . . Jamie Mendlovitz, campaign coordinator for the Straphangers Campaign, a riders group, asserted that the authority often undercounted ridership in poor areas. ''They don't have accurate figures,'' she said. ''Their figures are largely based on fares, and in a lot of areas there is a lot of turnstile jumping.'' -- From a news report in the New York Times.
