Bashing the Bosses
(FORTUNE Magazine) – The government cracked down on the $50-billion-a-year business of organized crime, and indictments brought to trial about half of the 50 biggest Mafia bosses (FORTUNE, November 10). Now six of the top ten on FORTUNE's list have been slapped with convictions for racketeering, conspiracy, and other crimes, and could each receive jail terms of more than 300 years. A New York federal jury in November found No. 1 mobster Anthony ''Fat Tony'' Salerno and the others guilty of controlling the Commission, a national council that for years has ruled the underworld like a board of directors. In a separate racketeering case, Colombo family members Gennaro Langella (No. 5) and Carmine Persico (No. 6) received sentences of 65 years and 39 years, respectively. Putting the bosses behind bars will weaken but not break the Mafia: They are good at managing from prison. |
