(FORTUNE Magazine) – PARCHMENT, MICH. -- Requiring boys and girls to wear graduation gowns of different colors is unconstitutional, an American Civil Liberties Union official charged. The ACLU has written a letter to the Parchment Board of Education complaining about the decision to require boys to wear maroon caps and gowns and girls to wear white. Paul J. Dennefeld, an ACLU representative in Kalamazoo, asked the board . . . to decide the issue ((before)) the school's graduation ceremonies . . . High school principal Mike O'Hara said a majority of the students favor having boys and girls wear gowns of different colors . . . $ Dennefeld said the wishes of the majority of students are irrelevant, and that basing gown colors on sex is unconstitutional. -- From an AP dispatch.
