(FORTUNE Magazine) – Starting pay for attorneys at New York's Cravath Swaine & Moore, often a bellwether for pay at other firms, has risen 8.7%, to $71,077. Price Waterhouse has upped its accountants' average starting salary 20%, to $30,000, but has decided to quit paying them overtime. Other Big Eight accounting firms are expected to follow. -- Democrats in the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee have pushed through bills that would raise taxes about $12 billion. President Reagan has promised to veto any tax increase.
