Of Gorbachev, gimmicks, and garters
By NANCY J. PERRY .

(FORTUNE Magazine) – Female speakers, take note: To gain entree to the exclusive breakfast/dinner club circuit, it helps to have cachet. Consider 60 Minutes correspondent Diane Sawyer. At the annual family dinner of the Chicago Commercial Club in December, the classy blond journalist -- the first woman ever to speak at the event -- talked poverty in Egypt; she talked T. S. Eliot; she talked Gorbachev. On the same day Sydney Biddle Barrows, a.k.a. the Mayflower Madam, ex-proprietor of the Cachet professional escort service, spoke at a New York City breakfast sponsored by the Smith/Greenland ad agency. Her topic: How to Market a High-Cost Service. She talked gimmicks (making her girls watch 60 Minutes to keep informed), garters (a must), and clientele (largely Wall Streeters). And this time her service was free.
