(FORTUNE Magazine) – SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah State Prison proposal to ((build)) a modern, steambath-type sweat lodge for American Indians would violate the inmates' religious rights, American Civil Liberties Union attorneys say . . . In ((a)) 1987 suit, American Indian inmates claimed ((that a)) sweat lodge served a ''legitimate religious purpose.'' They are ((still)) seeking permission to build an enclosed ((sweat lodge)) from native willows . . . heated with rocks. State Corrections Department officials said they could not approve such a facility ((because it)) would allow inmates ''to be secreted from direct observation.'' Scott McAlister of the Department of Corrections made a counter-offer last week, proposing construction of a building with ''ample glass or other clear and break-resistant substances so that visibility of participants can be maintained . . . at all times.'' ((ACLU Attorney Michael)) O'Brien said the state's proposal ''takes away the religious significance of the ceremony. It is unreasonable to deny an inmate's right to practice his religion.'' -- From a UPI dispatch.
