(FORTUNE Magazine) – The yellow legal pad, a mainstay not only for lawyers but also for all other compulsive takers of notes, is doomed. Colored paper simply costs too much to recycle -- certainly more than the white versions of the pads that corporations and local governments are increasingly switching to. Office product distributors like M.S. Ginn are coping with demand. Some white pads are themselves made of recycled paper, though they have few true fans -- they're lower quality and cost more. But even lawyers sometimes use them. Says a member of a Washington, D.C., firm that ordered up a batch for a conference: ''We want to be seen as socially responsible.''
