THE BOOKS CEOs ARE READING NOW
By Carol Davenport

(FORTUNE Magazine) – Several books turn up on more than one CEO's night stand, including two best- sellers: Scott Turow's novel The Burden of Proof and the memoir, Father, Son & Co., co-authored by former IBM CEO Thomas J. Watson Jr. and FORTUNE editor Peter Petre. Many chief executives read two or more books at a time -- as does President Bush. His summer reading list includes Robert Caro's ongoing biography of LBJ. Union Pacific Railroad CEO Mike Walsh is working on six books. A perennial favorite: Alan Paton's Cry, the Beloved Country, a 1948 novel about black South Africans. Walsh, who was raised in Portland, Oregon, has read this book every year since 1965. Why the fascination? ''It reminds me of the dilemmas that change creates.''
