KIDS WHO ARE GETTING THE MOST OUT OF SPORTS JENNIFER ORCUTT -- JOE GALVIN
By

(FORTUNE Magazine) – JENNIFER ORCUTT AND JOE Galvin are on a roll. The two 9-year-olds from Redwood City, California, spend three to four hours a day jumping, twirling, and spinning around a roller-skating rink in perfect time to pop and classical music. This type of skating is called artistic roller-skating. Jennifer and Joe are the best artistic roller skaters in the country in their age group. They won three titles at the United States Artistic Roller Skating Championships last July in Pensacola, Florida. Jennifer won the singles title for girls age 8 and under, and Joe won the singles title for boys age 8 and under. They also won the pairs championship for kids age 10 and under. In pairs competition, skaters must move together, as if they were mirror images of each other. They also perform lifts. Joe lifts Jennifer over his head three times during their 2 1/2-minute routine. Jennifer and Joe do well as a team because they are both excellent individual skaters, they work hard, they are good friends, and they are driven to win. They have skated together for three years. Jennifer, a third-grader, has skated since she was about a year old. ''I like pairs skating, but I also like to skate by myself,'' she says. ''Sometimes, I just spin until I get dizzy and fall down.'' Joe is a fourth-grader and has been skating for five years. He likes all styles of roller skating. He competes in figures, in which he skates intricate patterns, and in dance, which is similar to pairs but without the lifts. Joe won a state title in speed skating two years ago, and he plays roller hockey in a league for boys age 13 and under. ''Roller hockey is different from artistic skating because sometimes I have to play rough,'' says Joe. Jennifer and Joe plan to keep skating together. And they know they'll always have a place to practice: Jennifer's parents, Lorry and Ken Orcutt, manage the Redwood Roller Rink in Redwood City.
