MONGOLIA STEPS ONTO WORLD STAGE
By - Kate Ballen

(FORTUNE Magazine) – Meet the spearhead of Mongolia's upcoming export drive: the two-humped Bactrian camel. The hairy creature has an early lead over other Mongolian assets such as oil, coal, and furs now that the U.S. has signed trade agreements with the former Soviet satellite. Back in June, Amicale, a private New York City company that processes camel's hair for coats and sweaters, signed contracts to help set up a factory in Ulan Bator, the capital. The fiber from Bactrian camels, which dwell only in Mongolia and China, rivals cashmere for softness but costs a lot less. Amicale will try to put some U.S. management techniques in place. Says CEO Boris Shlomm: ''We are setting up a board of directors -- three Americans, three Mongolians -- and using U.S. accounting procedures.''
