BIG MAC ATTACKS SWISS TRACKS
By Carla Rapoport

(FORTUNE Magazine) – Hamburgers may be in the smokestack sector of the food business these days, but in Switzerland they are starting to roll -- on the railroad, that is. Two specially commissioned McDonald's dining cars, each seating about 40, will start offering passengers Big Macs at $3.55 each (vs. $1.79 in Peoria), fries, shakes, and all the rest by the end of May. The cars will run on two routes, from Geneva to Basel and Geneva to Brig, a small town that nestles in the heart of the Swiss Alps. McDonald's marketing manager in Lausanne, Martin Campiche, claims the Swiss love the menu -- but allows the need for fine-tuning. Travelers will have a choice of red or white wine and beer. And since the Swiss won't touch Egg McMuffins, the rolling restaurants will offer the national breakfast of croissant, marmalade, butter, and hard cheese. - C.R.
