IF YOUR DESK BEEPS, MOVE IT
By Antony J. Michels

(FORTUNE Magazine) – Noisy office furniture hardly sounds like an example of ergonomics, the science of making the workplace more hospitable to your body and mind. But now comes an adjustable desk that beeps periodically to remind users such as computer keyboard operators to hit a button so that an electric motor can change its height. You can program the desk to remember 16 positions and to remind you when to make the change. Switching positions roughly every 45 minutes or so helps reduce the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome or other repetitive-motion injuries to wrists, backs, and necks, according to the manufacturer, Haworth, a furniture company in Holland, Michigan. Trakkers, as the desks are called, cost $3,500 to $4,200. Since March, Haworth has shipped 750 of them. Customers include Knight Ridder's Lexington Herald-Leader, which bought 24. -- A.J.M.
