(FORTUNE Magazine) – PC INTERPRETER You said you were fluent in Spanish on your resume -- 11 years ago. Now the boss is sending you to Madrid in a week. The PC Interpreter talking translator by British Boston Co. of Totowa, New Jersey, will help you brush up on your vocabulary and your accent in a hurry. Hook up the Interpreter's speaker to your IBM-compatible PC, install the software, and get ready to habla espanol -- or French, Italian, or German. Choose from 2,000 words and 12,000 commonly used phrases, and hear them spoken aloud with the correct pronunciation. The Interpreter's software and speaker work with most laptop and notebook computers that have a hard disk drive, so you can even take it with you. The PC Interpreter, which comes with Spanish, costs $200; additional languages are $80 each. AEROBIC CROSS-TRAINER Squeezing a stair-stepper, treadmill, and cross-country ski machine into your home once meant you wouldn't have space for much else. Now NordicTrack, of Chaska, Minnesota, has packed all three exercisers into a single machine, the Aerobic Cross-Trainer. At 66 inches long and 21 inches wide when stored, the trainer can be wheeled to the center of the room for your workout. Pull two latches to release the stepper's hydraulic pedals. The nonmotorized treadmill converts to a ski machine when you place sliding skates with foot grips on top of the treadmill belt. You can exercise your upper body by using the machine's arm pulleys. A monitor tracks the intensity of your exercise and how much of that Haagen-Dazs you've burned off. The Cross-Trainer is available from NordicTrack for $1,199. EXTRAA-SINFUL ICE CREAM Anyone with a weakness for simple pleasures may do well to avoid Haagen-Dazs Extraas. These five exotic flavors emulate popular desserts, such as brownies a la mode, by packing all the appropriate ingredients into one pint. Triple Brownie Overload, for instance, crams pieces of brownie, pecans, and fudge in chocolate ice cream. Carrot Cake Passion combines carrot cake with cream cheese frosting-flavored ice cream. Dieters, beware -- at an average 82 calories per ounce, Extraas have 22% more calories than Haagen-Dazs plain chocolate. Price: $2.69. WIRELESS E-MAIL Traveling executives and salespeople can easily get enslaved by the telephone, calling in repeatedly for messages or struggling to hook up computer modems. Motorola's new wireless E-mail network, Embarc, may help solve the problem. Using satellites and a radio receiver called NewsStream, it lets you get (but not send) page-length messages and computer files on your IBM-compatible portable computer without ever dashing to a phone. Messages can be sent to you by anyone subscribing to publicly available E-mail networks offered by General Electric and IBM. Motorola is negotiating with other E-mail providers. Corporate E-mail systems that use computers linked within an office can usually be hooked up to Embarc, too. The NewsStream receiver, which attaches to your computer, costs $395. The subscription to Embarc costs $15 per month. A message sent nationwide costs the same if it goes to one person or a thousand but varies depending on its urgency. A hundred characters delivered in 15 minutes costs 50 cents. Overnight delivery costs 5 cents. There is also a handling charge of 13 cents per message. |
