(FORTUNE Magazine) – WASHINGTON -- The Federal Election Commission . . . formally recognized a new party fielding a presidential candidate . . . The FEC ruled the Natural Law Party, which advocates transcendental meditation in prisons and mapping the brains of political candidates, met the definition of a national party under federal law. The party's presidential candidate is John Hagelin, an Iowa professor who asked the FEC to approve taxpayer financing for his campaign. The FEC also approved ((an)) order requiring political extremist ((Lyndon)) LaRouche to repay the government $151,259 in tax dollars he received for his 1988 presidential bid. -- From an AP dispatch.
