(FORTUNE Magazine) – GALVESTON -- A Texas judge ordered a new trial in a personal injury case partly on the grounds that the original jury may have been influenced by President Bush's attack on frivolous lawsuits. State Judge Ed Harris of Galveston said Tuesday that Bush's criticism of trial lawyers in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention ''had a part'' in his order . . . granting a retrial. Tom Lightsey sued . . . Burlington Northern Inc. and Galveston Railway Inc. for about $1.8 million in damages . . . after injuring his back . . . while working as a switchman . . . The jury in its verdict the day after Bush's . . . speech . . . ruled against Lightsey, finding him mostly responsible for the injury . . . Afterward, Lightsey's lawyer . . . requested a new trial, arguing that Bush's call . . . for ''an end to crazy lawsuits'' prejudiced the jury. -- From a Reuters dispatch.
