THE VALUE SELL AT $115 MILLION
(FORTUNE Magazine) – It's not just computer makers that are being forced to bring value and versatility to their products. Come 1995, UAL, Continental, and other customers for the Boeing 777 will get a jet with more combinations than a bingo parlor. The $115 million aircraft is designed to allow the airlines to reconfigure the cabin rapidly for maximum yield. Say vacationers are clamoring for Christmas holiday flights from Los Angeles to Honolulu. An airline can transform the 777's three-class, 305-seat setup into 418 economy seats in just three days. Even the galleys and lavatories are modular and movable. The 777's costs are economy class too. Its twin engines -- the 421-seat 747 has four -- make the 777 fuel efficient. Boeing says passengers will glory in the jet's features: wide seats, big windows, and optional individual computer-and-video screens that offer movies, home shopping, and electronic chess. |
