(FORTUNE Magazine) – Staffs at several supermarket stores around Britain have taken to renaming packets of gingerbread men . . . ''gingerbread persons'' in a bid to take away references to gender. The move in branches of Gateway supermarkets has offended customers and bakers who say political correctness is being taken too far . . . ''Presumably these . . . staff members thought the term 'gingerbread men' would cause offense,'' the spokesman said . . . Debate on political correctness in Britain has been reignited in recent days, following the news that an East London headmistress stopped her pupils ((from)) seeing a Royal Opera House production of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet because of what she described as the play's overtly heterosexual tone. -- From a UPI dispatch.
