E-MAIL OF THE FAIRLY FAMOUS
(FORTUNE Magazine) – The hoi polloi can now schmooze with a few of the high and mighty, thanks to E-Mail Addresses of the Rich and Famous (Addison-Wesley, $7.95), a new paperback by book packager Seth Godin. Godin created this snob's nightmare by collecting addresses from fellow travelers in cyberspace and by looking through on-line directories. Some whose addresses were published by Godin don't mind. Mitchell Kapor, ex- CEO of Lotus Development and co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit group promoting universal access to the info highway, E-mails FORTUNE: ''I don't find the concept of publishing E-mail addresses objectionable, any more than I find the concept of publishing any sort of directory objectionable.'' But many of the famous, who already get too much unsolicited mail, worry that the electronic phone book will add to that pile. Best-selling author Tom Clancy writes: ''PLEASE DO NOT make my E-mail address public.'' Clancy, who uses his E-mail mainly for business, says, ''If I get deluged, then I can't do that anymore, and I hope you agree that even authors can have privacy.'' Microsoft's Bill Gates, who saw his E-mail volume skyrocket after his address was published in a New Yorker article, keyboards: ''I did not change my E-mail address, and I hope I don't have to. Many of the messages I get are just sent out of curiosity, and those I don't have time to respond to, I am afraid.'' Harried Apple Computer CEO Michael Spindler resorts to George Bush-like syntax when responding to a reporter's E-mail query: ''Yes there is an overload on messages coming in -- hard time to respond to them.'' Don't expect interesting responses from all the celebs. The most famous man in the book, Bill Clinton, sends back a form message. It begins: ''Thank you for writing to President Clinton via electronic mail. The President is committed to integrating this dynamic medium into the White House.'' Dynamic, indeed.
