Xmas Preview Christmas is for the dogs
By Erick Schonfeld

(FORTUNE Magazine) – The pitter-patter of paws circling anxiously around the Christmas tree will be a familiar sound this holiday season. The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association reports that 62% of all dog owners buy presents for their pooch. But what to get the dachshund that's got it all? You can start with an exercise treadmill from Jog-A-Dog of Genoa, Ohio -- if you're willing to spend between one and two grand for that cooped-up canine. For those who can find the time to walk their dogs, try the age-old mantra: accessorize. Flaunt Fido by dressing him in a rebellious denim vest ($20 to $25). Planning a cocktail party? Evening wear can be had at Pampered Paws, a Manhattan retailer that rents tuxedos for your preferred companion animal ($15, $25 for a holiday weekend). No need to worry that Boxer will be bored at home. Doggie Adventure ($20), by Made-For-Dog Video in Minneapolis, brings out the voyeur in every mutt with its teasing shots of a fire hydrant, farm animals, and trees. Thanks to California-based Lazy Pet, dogs can recline leisurely while they watch on their own pet sofas ($50) -- they come in an array of designer prints. A treat machine ($25 to $30) can really satisfy a doggy's cravings, especially when you pair it with a dogcatcher chew toy ($3) and a fancy ceramic bowl ($70) full of Thirsty Dog!, crispy beef-flavored bottled water ($1.89).--E.S.
