(FORTUNE Magazine) – BIGGEST INCREASES IN REVENUES

Mergers and acquisitions pushed the four leaders on the revenue increases table to their top spots. Compaq's 51% revenue jump, however, simply reflects continued strong demand for its computers. Profit champ Royal Dutch/Shell was helped by special items, lower tax rates, and a strong turnaround in chemicals. Wholesaler Alco Standard leads the profit increases category because it took a big restructuring charge in 1993, while Coca-Cola's ever effervescent earnings gave it the highest return on assets. The U.S. Postal Service, with 728,944 workers, rules the biggest employer rankings but--no surprise--nothing else.
