IS THERE SYNERGY IN THEIR STARS?
(FORTUNE Magazine) – Sure, the recent mergers between Walt Disney Co. and Capital Cities/ABC and Time Warner and Turner Broadcasting pair fine assets. But the most tantalizing question surrounding the two megadeals involves people: How can CEOs Mike Eisner and Jerry Levin possibly coexist with restless, grand-ego deputies like Mike Ovitz and Ted Turner? On the notion that the stars may tell us as much as any Wall Street analyst, Fortune asked astrologist Shelley von Strunckel, columnist for the London Sunday Times, to chart these high-octane honchos. Gazing at the new Disney team, our FORTUNE teller was especially riveted by Eisner's chart. While most Pisces are trusting idealists, she found that the Disney boss is no average fish: "Six of the ten heavenly bodies in the focused, determined signs indicate that he trusts no one." That we know. But the stars say all is not well. His chart's relation to Pluto--now there's a Disney planet--shows he has been plagued by years of distracting battles. Concludes von Strunckel: "His mind remains quick, but his spirit is tired." She notes that Ovitz, a Sagittarian, is a master of the unexpected feint. (Say, toward MCA.) "With five planets in the speedy fire signs, he will have already considered half a dozen options before others have fully grasped the first," she says. Von Strunckel adds that, because his sun is placed opposite Uranus, planet of the New Age in business, Ovitz has a unique advantage: "Instead of merely solving problems, he redefines them and so transforms even dire situations into assets." Will Ovitz be happy as Eisner's No. 2? "Temporarily." She says that Pluto will constrict the former uber-agent over the next 18 months. But, she adds, he will be plotting ways to revolutionize the media business. "This could be at Disney; it could be elsewhere," says our stargazer. "But in 1997, Michael Ovitz will be on top, wherever he is." Her advice to the new Time Warner duo: Watch out! Levin, a Taurus, and Turner, a Scorpio, could be headed for trouble--their charts are dominated by the planet Uranus. Says von Strunckel: "If consulted about a marriage between two individuals with charts as similar, I would warn them that partners with such similarities must be cautious of mutual blind spots." Von Strunckel also divines that the prospective partners are shielding secrets. "Both naturally adjust their approach to the needs of the setting, while keeping their ultimate strategy to themselves," she says. "They are unlikely to have said much about their intentions to each other; they just made a deal." She shares the accepted wisdom that Ted won't last. "Rough times are inevitable," she warns. Expect the hassles to start in April 1997. --Ken Labich |
