WORK HARDER, PLAY HARDER
(FORTUNE Magazine) – Every Saturday from March through May, managers, bankers, and lawyers from Seattle to Atlanta shed their ties and don their cleats to rumble in one of the world's roughest games--rugby. Started this year, the Harp USA Rugby Super League attracts mostly white-collar types--some 80% of the 420 ruggers are executives by day. With the pumped-up adrenaline of soccer and the brutal thrashing of football (minus protective pads and helmets), this sport appeals to corporate types because it helps them cope with the competitiveness and the stress of office life. "You are willingly pitting your wit and skill against someone else's," says Andy Brindle (here with the ball), a vice president at J.P. Morgan and a center for New York's Old Blue. "You think on your feet, and you find extra reserves of energy to pull you through. After a hard day's work, rugby is a great release." |
