THE BIGGEST LAW FIRMS
By LENORE SCHIFF

(FORTUNE Magazine) – If anyone ever decides to heed that advice in Shakespeare's Henry IV and "kill all the lawyers," a good starting place would be U.S. Business Litigation's annual survey of America's 1,000 largest law firms, ranked by the number of U.S. attorneys. Confirming the impression that lawyers are thick on the ground, the 1,000 firms include only about 12% of the lawyerly universe, according to Jennifer E. King, managing editor of the Chicago-based trade magazine. Firms in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles make up nearly 25% of those on the list, but No. 1 is Cleveland-based Jones Day, and No. 10 is Milwaukee's Foley & Lardner. Females account for almost 15% of the top 1,000's partners. The fastest-growing practice areas? Litigation and business and corporate law.
