Borneo to Shanghai
By John W. Huey Jr./Managing Editor

(FORTUNE Magazine) – When we read in the papers that the Sultan of Brunei's brother Prince Jefri had reportedly gone missing with some $8 billion of the family fortune, we knew just what to do: send our man Rich Behar in search of him. You may remember Rich from past efforts at FORTUNE. He's the guy who told the fascinating story of his journey to the Bre-X gold mine in Indonesia just before the company collapsed in scandal, and he won prizes for his expose of New York City's Mob-controlled garbage industry. Sure enough, Rich did finally catch up with the prince in London for a first-ever interview, but only after he had traveled to Brunei (it's on the island of Borneo) for a fuller picture of what really lay behind Jefri's problems with his family. The story that he came back with is, in a word, incredible. Block out a little time before turning to it because I guarantee you won't want to put it down.

Behar's sojourn in search of Prince Jefri is just one of the ways FORTUNE augments the international coverage generated by our five bureaus in Asia and two in Europe. Our fifth annual FORTUNE Global Forum, scheduled for Shanghai this September, marks the biggest, most important international event in our magazine's history. No place has sparked more curiosity among global business leaders than China, the world's largest market. And our forum, the opening dinner of which will be hosted by President Jiang Zemin, already has attracted such CEO participants as Jack Welch, Michael Dell, Doug Ivester, Roger Enrico, Goran Lindahl, and our own Gerald Levin. It's such a big deal, in fact, that John Needham, president of our conference division, has picked up his family from New York and moved to Shanghai to fine-tune every detail. See you in September, Johnny.
