The Industry Rankings
(FORTUNE Magazine) – To complete this list of the world's most admired companies, FORTUNE consulted a select group of experts--senior executives and outside board members of companies in each of the industries included, along with relevant Wall Street analysts. As with FORTUNE's list of America's most admired corporations (March 2 issue; available in the fortune.com archive), which is limited to companies based in the U.S., our global companies were rated according to eight criteria: overall management quality, product or service quality, innovativeness, acquiring and keeping talent, value as a long-term investment, financial strength, commitment to community and the environment, and use of corporate assets. To reflect this list's international scope, we have added a ninth category, global business acumen. A company's overall ranking is the average of the scores of all nine attributes. We have also added an all-star list, which appears in the accompanying story. To compile that list, we asked our panel of experts to name the five companies they admire most, in any industry and in any country; the top 25 vote-getters were named to the all-star roster. HOW WE SELECTED THE INDUSTRIES Working with the Hay Group, a worldwide, Philadelphia-based consulting firm, we divided the world's largest companies into 45 industries and then eliminated categories dominated by one country or with fewer than four companies. The result was 24 industries; new this year are two insurance groups and the retailing category.
