The Advent of The Mac-'n-Cheesesicle
(FORTUNE Magazine) – Ever found yourself tucking into a plate of scrambled eggs and thinking, "I sure wish this breakfast was available in a portable format"? Well, have we got a product for you. It's IncrEdibles, a new line of frozen, microwavable convenience foods packaged in small, cylindrical containers. The meals, which come in six varieties (three based on scrambled eggs, three on macaroni and cheese), are eaten via a plastic stick that attaches to the bottom of the tube and is used to push the food out the top. IncrEdibles were launched in November by Breakaway Foods, an Ohio operation. Availability so far is limited to parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, but Breakaway, citing figures that show handheld foods to be the top growth area in the frozen-food category, hopes for eventual national distribution. IncrEdibles have a clever brand name and undeniable novelty appeal, but how do they taste? An informal FORTUNE taste test found them to be neither as good as you might hope nor as bad as you might fear--in short, about par for the course for a nuke-and-serve meal. The real problem is in the alleged convenience factor: The plastic push-up handles mount clumsily onto the cylinders, and the need to hold the container in one hand while pushing with the other means IncrEdibles can't be eaten while driving, reading, or walking the dog or during any other activity that requires a free hand. For now, at least, the Egg McMuffin's market position seems secure. --Paul Lukas |
