Barges: The Billboards of the New Millennium?
By Melanie Warner

(FORTUNE Magazine) – At a distance, it looks like one of those historic ships that pull into Newport, R.I., occasionally. But I'm on 101 South, heading toward Brisbane, Calif. Turns out it's a barge with sails (original, no?) touting Art.Com as the online destination for art buying. The getup is so tall that people report seeing it from the Bay Bridge, ten miles north. You'd think this would be illegal--but as long as the vessel is mobile, it's legit. With billboards along 101 sold out through January (book now, and you may get one in 2003), the shoreline could soon resemble a regatta.
