And You Can Keep The Wine...
(FORTUNE Magazine) – We handed $100 to Christie Dufault, sommelier at Vincent Guerithault on Camelback, in Phoenix, and a tour guide to France for Butterfield & Robinson. Her mission? Buy wine and take notes: I had so much fun. Normally, I'd beeline to the French section and spend it all on one burgundy, but I wanted to recommend three wines. I found two from California that I'm very excited about. DRAPPIER, ROSE, Val des Demoiselles, MV, $40. I like to try champagnes from quality producers but not necessarily the grand mark. (Champagne should be enjoyed on a more regular basis.) This is a full-flavored rose, with forward fruit flavors but a dry, clean finish. CALERA, VIOGNIER, Mt. Harlan 1997, $28. I'm so tired of fat, over-oaked chardonnays. Producers want you to remember their chardonnays, and people think bigger is better. A viognier is the best alternative. This has the most stunning nose of florals, nectarine, peach, and lychee. JAYSON, RED BLEND, Napa Valley 1997, $32. Ripe and lush, with gobs of flavor--a great wine. Though a blend of varietals, it sort of falls in the cabernet sauvignon category. It's the second label of a more well-known wine called Pahlmeyer. I would have bought the Pahlmeyer, but it was too expensive.... |
