(FORTUNE Magazine) – NASH KATO Debutante (Will Records) Fans may fret that Kato's left behind his band, Urge Overkill--one of the few alt-rock acts with any spice. Not to worry: Debutante has a lusty ode to Corsican siren Laetitia Casta and enough squealing riffage to induce involuntary spasms of air guitar. BR5-49 Coast to Coast (Arista) You don't hear a lot of memorable live albums anymore, but this one--capturing the Nashville road hogs on their endless hoedown--is a boot-scuffing, bottle-smashing exception. Breathe deep, and you'll smell the spilled bourbon in the floorboards. DEVO Pioneers Who Got Scalped: The Anthology (Rhino) What's amazing about these original dot-com pop geeks is that--after all these years--their plastic, herky-jerky hits still manage to sound totally catchy ("Whip It," "Gates of Steel," "Uncontrollable Urge") and really, really weird ("Mongoloid," "Peek-a-Boo!"). ARLING & CAMERON Music for Imaginary Films (Emperor Norton Records) Ever wish you lived in a movie--maybe a Kennedy-era spy saga or a scooters-and-cigarettes romp from the French New Wave? Complete the fantasy with this Dutch duo's pseudo-cinematic reel of tiki-lounge balladry, campy disco, and electronic samba. SUPERGRASS Supergrass (Island/Def Jam) When Supergrass exploded out of England in 1995, they were a trio of raffish teen punks. They've gotten more sophisticated--even kind of arty, bringing to mind Radiohead--but they've never lost that original jolt of teen caffeine. |
