...And You Can Keep the Wine
(FORTUNE Magazine) – Name: Albert D. Omahen, sommelier at Baleen, Grove Isle Hotel, Coconut Grove, Fla. Mission: We gave him $100 to buy some wine on the condition he tell us what he chose. I went to a retail store, which I hardly ever do (I usually buy wholesale). I had to ask people where to go to buy good wine... Grosset, Riesling, Polish Hill, Clare Valley, Australia, 1998; $23. It was a dry Riesling, which I like with an appetizer. It had citrusy flavors--pink grapefruit and tangerine--and a touch of honey, a hint of petrol. It was very complex. Tom Eddy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 1995; $75. I have 400 wines on my list, but not this one. It gets talked about a lot, and to have finally tried it was great. I had dinner with it. Silky, velvety texture, big sweet blackberry fruit. A hint of spice, a cigar-box aroma, a hint of cedar. I could go on and on. There were four different microclimates in that bottle of wine. I had it with lamb. It was perfect! I even had it two days later and it was amazing. |
