Making Sure There's a Phone for Every Friend
By Daniel Roth; David Pinsky

(FORTUNE Magazine) – Motorola stock may be down 40% this year, but don't think the company's not doing all it can to boost sales. In Mariah Carey's latest video, she keeps up with duet partner Snoop Dogg on an ever-present Motorola Timeport P930 pager. For this clever bit of placement, the company can thank David Pinsky. As the head of Motorola's Entertainment Marketing group, Pinsky has the job of making sure famous people gab on Motorola products. We wanted to know what a company from Schaumburg, Ill., was doing mixing it up on Sunset Strip.

Q: The folks at Motorola headquarters are stuck in minus-30-degree weather, and you're in Hollywood?

A: We're helping to reach yet another audience, and we're fully supported by Motorola.

Q: Sure, but still...

A: They get charged by it. The employees are charged when they see that we've given a product to Mariah Carey or Leonardo DiCaprio or the cast of Friends. It's important, and it helps create an awareness of our product.

Q: Who's your favorite Friend?

A: David Schwimmer.

Q: Have you ever gotten drunk and prank-called any of the celebrities?

A: No, but I do have a very interesting Palm Pilot. When I look at my Rolodex, I have the names and numbers of a lot of influential people.

Q: What happens when a star is no longer a star, like, say, Tina Yothers. Do you take the phone away?

A: No.

Q: Did you try to take Travolta's phone back after Battlefield Earth?

A: I haven't seen the movie, have you?

Q: No.

A: But we wouldn't do that.

Q: Who's the meanest celebrity?

A: I have yet to meet someone who hasn't been nice to us. Remember, they also want something from Motorola. So everyone we've worked with has been very polite. And these are people who come hang out at the office. Leonardo hung out for an hour or so. Tyra Banks was here. She was really sweet....

Q: Do you get your picture taken with them?

A: No. I'm not a fanatic.

Q: You should have gotten Leonardo to pass out a phone to the President.

A: I think he had his own issues that weekend.
