And You Can Keep The Wine
(FORTUNE Magazine) – Liz Willette is a sales rep for Michael Skurnik, a wine importer and distributor in New York City. We gave her $100 to buy some wine--on the condition that she tell us what she chose. Fountain Grove, $24.99 Viognier, Sonoma, 1996 I usually drink viognier from the Rhone, and I wanted to try it from the States. The reason I love viognier is that it has a wonderful mouth feel to it, almost an oiliness. A floral bouquet, but often quite dry on the palate. This was a lot hotter--higher in alcohol--than the French version but still had a lot of pear and honeysuckle and quince flavors. It's ready to drink. Drink it now. Ken Wright Cellars, $24.99 Pinot Noir, Willamette, 1997 Oregon had a weird year in 1997, but those that made good wines made very good wines. And Ken Wright always makes good wines. This particular pinot was amazing. Lots of ripe red fruit. Cassis, cherry, raspberry. Great acidity, which makes it a wonderful food wine. It was a little tannic, but I think it's still quite young. Bodegas y Vinedos $49.99 Mauro-Toro, San Roman, Castilla y Leon, 1997 Most Spanish wines are aged in American oak, but this one, made from the tinto de toro grape, was aged in 100% French oak. It doesn't have that overbearing oakiness that a lot of Spanish wines have. It had a lot of blackberry, cherry in it. Lush and earthy, which I love. Total: $99.97 |
