(FORTUNE Magazine) – Paper The brown classics aren't exactly earth-friendly; just think of clear-cut forests, ruined habitats, and mills belching hazardous emissions. But a paper bag is five times likelier to be recycled, according to the EPA. OR Plastic Not so fantastic. Production of these bags, made from nonrenewable petroleum, releases carbon dioxide into the air. Shoppers use more of them (for double bagging). The worst part: They never biodegrade. VERDICT A canvas tote. If you want to use an old standby, paper bags made from recycled fibers are the next best choice. Check for the recycling information on the bottom of the bag. --Reed Tucker |
