America's Sweetheart
By Alex Taylor III

(FORTUNE Magazine) – The cost of perfection in personal transportation is $29,173. That was the sticker price of the new 2002 Toyota Camry SE that I drove over a recent weekend. Sure, there were some things I didn't like: The spoiler on the rear deck looks ludicrous on a sedan, and the interior was a gloomy, dark gray. But the Camry interacts seamlessly between you and the road. With perfectly intuitive controls, it delivers a brisk, comfortable ride amid pleasant surroundings. Toyota would like you to believe that this fifth-generation model has more zest than earlier versions, but people who own Camrys want their spirits soothed, not aroused. If you want entertainment, buy a videogame; if you want superb transportation, get a Camry.
